The PLACE Training for Planners, provided in conjunction with the Rocky Mountain Land Use Institute, is an in-depth skill-building session for planners on how to create community environments that promote and foster health.  This one-day interactive workshop includes presentations, exercises, case examples, and discussions that address:
  • the historical relationship of land use planning and public health
  • the connection between community design and health issues
  • planning principles that encourage active and healthy communities
  • the five strategic points of intervention and collaboration between planning and public health
  • the value and benefits of including public health advocates as partners in the planning process
  • how to incorporate health elements into policy, plans and codes.
This training is primarily intended for planners and transportation planners. We encourage communities to send teams that represent all participants in their planning processes. 

Planning Active Community Environments (PLACE)
Training for Public Health Adovcates
 

The PLACE Training for Public Health Advocates, provided in conjunction with the Rocky Mountain Land Use Institute, is an in-depth skill-building session on land use planning and community design.  This one-day workshop is structured to provide public health professionals and advocates with the knowledge and skills to actively participate in the land use planning and development review process to create Smart Growth active living environments.  This training addresses:

  • the relationship between public health and active community environments
  • the history of land use planning and public health
  • Smart Growth principles for active communities
  • key elements of the community planning process
  • the five strategic points of intervention and collaboration between planning and public health

In addition, workshop exercises include:

  • reading a land use plan, zoning code and map
  • reading a development proposal and writing a referral response

This training is intended for public health professionals and other health advocates interested in the relationship between land use planning, community design & health.
